Since the latest updates (14.0, 14.0.1, 14.0.2) I’ve had these very inconsistent problems with page saving. The only way I’m able to save some problematic pages are by deactivating Yoast or trying to save the page with no content in it. It’s very inconsistent, some pages save no problem, others don’t. If I remove page content, I can save the page with Yoast activated and If there is page content, the only way it saves is with Yoast deactivated. This behavior is the same on my environment where WP is updated to 5.4 as on my production environment where WP is at 5.3.2. We activated WP_DEBUG, WP_DEBUG_LOG, WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY and all this is silent, no php error displayed.

Update : Same thing after updating to 14.0.3

Same for me after updating to 14.0.3.

In Tools > Site Health 14.0.3 (same as 14.0.2) I get “The REST API encountered an unexpected result”

I’m unable to update any pages or posts while the plugin is activated.

All of it goes away after deactivating Yoast.

Update : Same thing with 14.0.4. This is getting out of control lol

So if you’ve read my initial post @torchy23 the only way I can save the page when yoast is activated is by removing the page content temporarily. It’s super weird and annoying.
Here’s what I do every time I need to update a page :
    — I activate the plugin so I can enter SEO title and description
    — I “cut” the page content temporarily, so I can save the page with yoast activated
    — Once the page is saved the SEO is now logged properly
    — I go and de-activate the plugin so I can paste my page content and save the page
    — I re-activate the plugin so it shows live.

It’s insane. It’s this or I deactivate it, which is not an option on production server of course.

    Hi @ogdendominic,

We’re sorry you’re running into this problem. Could you please share your error logs, to give us a better understanding of what’s happening exactly? That would be very helpful.

    Thanks!

That’s the thing @tacoverdo like I said in my initial post, it’s completely silent even with WP_DEBUG, WP_DEBUG_LOG, WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY set to true in my wp-config.php file.

@tacoverdo is it safe to uninstall Yoast, and reinstall 13.5 ? That seems to have fixed unresolved issues for a lot of people. If yes, please guide me to the 13.5 install. I’ve been struggling with this for a week now with projects on hold because of this.

@ogdendominic If you wish to revert back to version 13.5 you can. To download a previous version of the plugin, ?you can do so by performing the following steps:
    ?

After downloading the 13.5 version, you can then perform a manual update of the plugin. We have instructions on how to upgrade the plugin manually at the following link: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp. You will need an FTP program such as FileZilla and your FTP details, which can be obtained from your host provider.

    @ogdendominic

We are not sure if you are still experiencing the issue but if you are we will keep this topic open for another week after which we will close it in order to keep the overview.

Yes it still occurs and apparently I’m not alone experiencing 500 (not 504 my bad) errors and time out on save.

@ogdendominic A 500 error is an internal server error, which can occur for a very large number of different reasons including that the server cannot output the file in the manner it was requested, if the resources required to generate the page are not available, the request is timing out due to the resource restrictions, and many others. However, if a 500 error is occurring on the site that type of error will be logged on the server. You may not have access to the log where the details of the error are located, but if you ask for this information from your hosting provider they should be able to provide it upon request. Can you please check with your hosting provider and see whether they are able to review their log files for the server and provide more specific information for the 500 errors that you are receiving?

It seems indeed that having Yoast + our own custom functions was too much for the server and causing 500 and 504 errors even if our code has zero php errors in it. We’re looking at reducing calls like wp_nav_menu or watching the current language ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE from WPML so that the payload is less heavy. Since disabling Yoast resolved the issue we were sure it was plugin-related, especially with all the Yoast issues lately. Closing this, thanks.
