On more than 4 websites I manage I can no longer save changes to posts, pages and even widgets, I also can’t preview them.

As far as I can tell this is caused by some conflict with the Classic Editor (not necessarily with the plugin) because this only happens with things that use the classic editor, this includes the Classic Editor plugin, popup plugins, and even Elementor (only when using the Text Editor widget).

And it only happens if there is some code in the content, but not some rogue html code mistakenly pasted in (although that breaks it too) but simple styling code (anything <span style) or just simply centering text (anything <p ), in one rare occasion in Elementor just having the word “well-developed” was enough to cause saving errors, removing the “-” fixed it, and having a “-” anywhere else in the content did not cause issues.

If you need some concrete example then right now I’m having an issue with https://trueskinclinic.ca/ where I would’ve needed to add a new popup yesterday but can’t because the popup plugin (Itro Popup) automatically ads p tags around the text and therefor when I hit save I get redirected to a Not Found page instead (and nothing gets saved).

This is also what happens when trying to save or preview changes on previously posted post and pages that have the unfortunate luck of having text centered, once I remove the centering code then it lets me save/publish.

If I use the Text Editor widget in Elementor and such code happens to be in the content then it gives me a “Server error” when trying to update, once the code is removed updating works again, like magic.

I tried disabling all plugins and nothing changed.

All the websites this is an issue on are hosted in the same place, in case that matters.

Also I’m presuming this is caused by the latest minor update to WordPress (6.4.1) because I only noticed this issue a few days ago (I work on WP websites daily)

Let me know if I can provide any more details.

    Hi @joegp,

Have you tried running a conflict test? Please try these troubleshooting steps and check which one works:

    • Disable Gutenberg and run a plugin/theme compatibility test
      – Switch to a WordPress default theme, “Twenty Twenty-Three”. Then check again to see if it resolved the issue.
      – Deactivate all your plugins
      – Reactivate and check them one by one
If you figure out what’s causing this issue, contact the plugin/theme support team and let them know.
    • Update WordPress, plugins, and themes to the latest versions available and check again.
    • Check error logs, using the browser’s developer tools (F12) for any messages that might explain the issue when saving. Look at the Console and Network tabs.
    • Restore a previous backup and revert WordPress to see if it resolves the issue.

After all, if the issue persists, you can contact your hosting support and ask them to check for any server-related issues.

Hope it helps! Let me know how it goes on your end.

The classic editor works fine on my website as does the block editor. I was having problems a few days ago with them. I discovered that I had a lot of of unused widgets. I deleted them all one by one. Now everything works fine. I’ve also learned not to use plugins that aren’t compatible with my WordPress theme. Doing so could cause problems when I make changes to my widgets.

“Disable Gutenberg” ? I thought you were smoking something for a second there until I googled it, anyway, disabling it didn’t help.

I don’t see what the theme has to do with the backend but I switched to Twenty Twenty and it didn’t help.
I also deactivated all the plugins again (except for the Classic Editor) and it didn’t help.

There were 6 plugin updates, issue was present before and after updating them.

Not sure I used the Developer tools correctly and I can’t say I understand fully what the Network tab is showing but I didn’t see any issues.
    The Console tab however said:

    Missing data from PHP (wpNotesArgs).
    (anonymous) @ admin-bar-v2.js?ver=12.8.1-202348-lite:1

I checked the cPanel error log too and there was nothing.

“revert WordPress” … yeah, sure would be nice to have a ‘Revert to previous version of WordPress button”, I’m not gonna be doing that or restoring a backup, not on this website anyway.

Oh and I forgot to mention on this particular website I can’t even add an image, I click on Add media, select the image and click Insert and nothing happens, if I add the image code by hand and try and save or preview I get redirected to the Not Found page.

@rt1959 I never said I have an issue with the block editor.

Also I don’t have a lot of unused widgets, most of the websites I manage only have the Recent widgets and Categories widget.

Also before the latest WP updated all my themes and plugins were compatible it seems, since I had no issues, and these websites I manage use different themes, yet have the same issue, clearly the theme doesn’t matter, I also deactivated all the plugins, yet issue still present, clearly the plugins don’t matter.

I was expecting you guys to ask me some server info, like PHP version, I guess that doesn’t matter ?

OK, maybe it’s not the latest update, I just had work to do on a website where auto updates is not on, so WP 6.4.1 is not installed yet and it’s having the same issues, so I contacted our hosting companies support.

OK, it seems it was a server issue after all since the server support guys fixed it, here’s what they said:

On checking your issue it looks like your websites triggered a mod_security rule on the server. This can lead to your website throwing up an error message and/or locking you out of the server.
I have whitelisted the mod_security rule in question for your domain since it was a false positive hit so it shouldn't happen again.

Glad to hear that! Happy website managing!
