I’ve tried everything I can find in the support groups and in the Wiki. I’m using ezpublishing.com as my server and can’t seem to find much in my mySQL database. my .htaccess file is blank now. I cannot edit anything with the WP control panel, and when I upload a text file via ftp and then convert it to .htaccess, the site goes down.

Is there a special way to write the code into the .htaccess doc other than /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

    thanks

  • You let WordPress write to the .htaccess file after making it writable and then use a string like the one you quoted in the WordPress options as explained here. I think your problem is that you are trying to put that text in the .htaccess by mistake.

right. I feel like I”ve tried everything in there. I can’t get the .htaccess writeable, even though I can type on my screen. I have even done the var.php file via FTP to make it look like I have an Apache server. When I view .htaccess in the wordpress control panel – it is blank. if I change it via ftp to /%year%/%monthnum%/úy%/%postname%/ it breaks down. there must be more direction that I need to give it?

    var.php file? what?

In your FTP client ensure you have Show hidden files enabled, then right click on the .htaccess file, you should then have options to change the permissions on the file, it could possibly call this CHMOD, in the screen to change permissions there should be a text box where you can type in numbers, type in 666 there and then hit enter.

Then go into WordPress and in your admin area goto Options / Permalinks, enter in the format you want and then press Update permalink structure.
