I receive this message when I try to restore Updraftplus below. I deactivated it while trying to test the updraftplus to see if it was messing up jetpack. I reactivated updraft plus and it now gives me the message below when I try to restore the site before I deactivated any plug ins. Help please!

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

It appears to be a file permission issue, meaning UpdraftPlus or WordPress does not have the correct read or write permission to a certain folder or file.

Can you make sure that UpdraftPlus and WordPress has the correct file permission. The following article on Smashing Magazine is a good guide as to the file permissions/ownerships that are required for WordPress: https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/05/proper-wordpress-filesystem-permissions-ownerships/#file-and-folder-ownership-for-wordpress

    Kind Regards,
    Bryle

thank you but that article to smashing magazine was VERY confusing and technical.

I’m in the cPanel of Hostgator/my server and have no idea where to go from there because the only option that I think could be relevant is the My SQL Database and there was nothing about Groups or echo exec etc. Just a bunch of Statuses that all said OK.

Then I tried going into the my PHP admin and found a few groups: CGroup Path, cGroup UID Data Reload etc

    Any ideas?

    Hi,

    Apologies for the delay.

The groups and users refers to the users on the server itself. For example, there will be a user that you can log in as to access FTP. When the site is run via a browser, a ‘webuser’ account is used.

I would recommend asking your hosts to check the file permissions and ownership, as they should have full knowledge of how the users and permissions are set up.

Okay thank you ?? I’m trying that now.

Okay, the server people at Hostgator say that the permission are correct, and asked if I need a specific permission set. However, now when I backup with Updraft, it’s fine. But I don’t want to find out when doing a site restore that everything is lost… How can I ensure this doesn’t happen.
    Thanks ??

    Hi,

How much free disk space is there in your hosting account, compared to the size of the site (i.e. used and unused quota)?

It is possible that the issue was caused by a lack of space in the hosting account when unpacking the backup.

    Thread Starter slv1982

    (@slv1982)

    Hi thank you!

986.19 MB total disk space used and 999,999.00 MB quota limit (971.15 MB used).

    Hi,

The file that caused the error is a cache file. What caching plugin do you use on the site?

We are also working on improving the debug output when errors such as this occur, to hep identify the cause of the problem.

    Thread Starter slv1982

    I’m using “WP Fastest Cache”

    Plugin Contributor DNutbourne

    (@dnutbourne)

    Hi,

The file that is causing the issue appears to be a backup of a cache file.

As such, I would recommend manually deleting this file ‘public_html/wp-content/cache.1495679280.bak’ before attempting to restore again, as there appears to be a file permission issue specific to that file.

    Thread Starter slv1982

    (@slv1982)

So are you saying that I should delete “WP Fastest Cache” then run/make a backup of my site with UpdraftPlus? Or did you mean something else like I have to go into the server back end?

    Thread Starter slv1982

    (@slv1982)

Let me add to the above comment. The WP Fastest Cache isn’t even activated. I am trying to run a back up now and I’m getting these error messages:

Last backup job run: Fri, April 13, 2018 14:20
Dropbox error: failed to upload file to backup_2018-04-13-1420_Meredibly_Sarah_Lacey_Vigue_bb1b3fa59e63-uploads3.zip (see log file for more)

    Hi,

Apologies for the confusion. Please could you remove this specific file:
    /home1/slv1982/public_html/wp-content/cache.1495679280.bak

Could you also send us a copy of the latest backup log?

    Thread Starter slv1982

    (@slv1982)

Okay I deleted that file and only that file.
I don’t know how to send you a copy of the latest backup log. However, after forcing site visits, switching browsers, clearing each cache/history etc in each browser, I was able to make a back up. It took 2 hours.

So now I’m back to the original problem of not know if the site restore will be reliable ??

    Hi,

    Apologies for the delay.

You can download the log file and upload the contents to an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin. Then, post the link here.

The restoration was prevented by the cache file, as UpdraftPlus was not able to move it out of the way. As it is now removed, the restoration should complete correctly.

If a restoration fails when performed via UpdraftPlus, it is possible to manually restore the backup files.
Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
