Can't restore backup of site!

All of a sudden I couldn’t login today (9/19). Finally got in my disabling Clef. My plan was to disable plugins to find the culprit, but no plugins would deactivate nor would Woocommerce 2.2.4 update.
The database for my site suddenly wouldn’t connect with my site. I did a WP Clone backup yesterday, luckily. Tried to restore to that backup and the site is completely down. WP clone backup will not restore.
I’m at a loss. Should a do a fresh install of WordPress and try to restore to one of the several WP Clone backups?
