I’ve deleted a page but want to re-use the old slug. I have ‘permanently deleted’ the page from the trash. When I try to rename the page with the old slug it adds -2 to the name. I have google-searched and looked in forums to see if there is a plugin which removes old slugs, but all the recommended ones are for much old versions of WP (I’m using 4.2.2). I’ve installed a database optimizer (Optimize Database after Deleting Revisions) and run that, but I still can’t re-use the old slug. NB I have emptied the browser cache. Any suggestions of what else I could try? I am not very technical and would rather not have to start tinkering with the database!

    Thanks.

  • Perhaps you have a some “hidden” post that uses the desired slug? What happens when you load the slug? ie https://example.com/slug/

Thank so much Martin. I don’t know why I didn’t think of loading the slug to find out where it was. I’m using the Polylang plugin (for the first time so am only just finding my way around it) and found that I had deleted the original page in one language version only. Problem now solved.
