I am not able to manually download backups on several sites I manage. When I click the download link, from the topbar icon, or from the Dashboard BackWPup Backups submenu, the white box with “Please wait…” pops up, and nothing else happens.

I have reproduced this in multiple browsers and on multiple sites. They are all on the same host so far, but I am also able to download backups of other sites in the same account on the same host without a problem, so it can’t be a server issue. The sites have no plugins in common other than BackWPup and Wordfence (and I am able to download normally from many sites with Wordfence).

I had posted to another thread someone else started abut this same issue, which you closed without an apparent resolution. You told that poster to press F12 when “Please wait” came up, and report any error messages that appeared on the Console tab, so I tried that on two sites. Both showed:

JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 1.4.1
    load-scripts.php:9:542

In addition, one of them also showed:

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at wss://public-api.wordpress.com/pinghub/wpcom/me/newest-note-data.

    rest-proxy:6:4244

When I tried to download from the same site using Chrome, I got this:

JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 1.4.1
?v=2.0:6 WebSocket connection to ‘wss://public-api.wordpress.com/pinghub/wpcom/me/newest-note-data’ failed: Error during WebSocket handshake: Unexpected response code: 403
    m @ ?v=2.0:6
    load-scripts.php?c=0&load[]=hoverIntent,common,admin-bar,jquery-ui-widget,jquery-ui-position,wp-pointer,thickbox,svg-painter,heartbeat,wp-auth-check,undersc&load[]=ore,backbone&ver=729aca482bebfb0044fffe441c6f4b97:2
    [Violation] ‘setTimeout’ handler took 106ms
[Violation] Forced reflow while executing JavaScript took 101ms

I hope you can provide a fix for this soon. I have worked very hard to persuade my clients to donwload their backups on a regular basis, and now download isn’t working. I can download them via FTP, of course, but most of my clients don’t have that level of technical comfort.

The problem is NOT resolved. Since my provider is not Rackspace and I am not getting certificate errors (and furthermore, the problem is only impacting some, but not all domains in the same hosting account, which would seem to rule out certificate issues, don’t you think?), I couldn’t see the relevance of the other thread you posted. Though it was hard to tell, since you linked to a whole thread, but the only solution I saw was linked in that thread to yet another thread. How about if you link directly to what you want me to see next time, so I don’t have to read a whole threadful of posts. This problem has already consumed far too much of my time.

    @syzygist,
So I’m sorry to waste your time,
Could you please try this one too, seems like the WebSocket url ( wss://public-api.wordpress.com/pinghub/wpcom/me/newest-note-data ) related to JetPack plugin, so try to disable JetPack and try again.

Here I what I found about your issue:

1). Some of the sites on which this is occurring do not have Jetpack (I did already mention that they have no plugins in common)

2). Deactivating Jetpack did not resolve the problem

3). Only one of the affected sites showed the particular error message that you are referring to

Here is an additional error message that appeared in the console today when trying to download a backup from a site that does not have Jetpack installed.

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at https://domain.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=download_file&destination=FOLDER&jobid=1&file=/home/username/public_html/wp-content/uploads/backwpup-51a576-backups/backwpup_DVI2K5QY01_2018-08-01_01-31-21.zip&local_file=backwpup_DVI2K5QY01_2018-08-01_01-31-21.zip&_wpnonce=0460b75cd2.

I tried downloading the same backup file from the same site in Chrome, and got these errors:

load-scripts.php?c=0&load[]=jquery-core,jquery-migrate,utils,jquery-ui-widget,jquery-ui-core,jquery-ui-mouse,jquery-ui-draggable,jquery-ui-slider,jquery-tou&load[]=ch-punch,iris,wp-color-picker,moxiejs,plupload&ver=c75b01d92835de16d4dd48a657099f3e:9 JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 1.4.1

[Violation] Forced reflow while executing JavaScript took 45ms

I’m no expert but it sure looks like a JavaScript problem to me.

I am having a similar problem. Some sites have the window popup with “Please Wait …” that just sits there. On other sites it progresses to display a message “Your download is being generated …” with a progress bar.

What is the purpose of this popup window?!?! What is being generated?!?! The same thing happens when I test downloading a backup from the Dropbox folder within WP-Admin -> BackWPup -> Backups. The file is sitting in Dropbox and a copy on my PC so I can see the backup file. What has to be generated to download a copy of a tar.gz file? The backups used to download fine without this new popup window.

I’m not sure what has happened with v3.5 and v3.6 but between this, the issue with header errors when when opening .tar.gz with 7zip, the dot folder in the root, and the substantial increase in plugin size from the “aws” folder (but those are other threads) the quality of this plugin has plummeted.

I forwarded your issue to our devs then will back to you as soon as possible.
    Please be a bit patience.
    Thank you!

Hi – I had a similar problem. Narrowed it down to a plugin conflict with BBQ firewall plugin. Try deactivating all security plugins, and then try manual download again. If resolved, activate them one by one to figure out the conflicting plugin. May be it can help.

Thanks, but I always do that before I even post to a support forum. I believe I mentioned it in the earlier thread I posted to, which was marked resolved without a resolution. (Since I was not the OP, I was not able to reopen it and had to create a new post). Also, there are no plugins that all of the sites experiencing this problem have in common.

    Thread Starter syzygist

Very disappointed that I am STILL having to download backups via FTP on multiple sites, and the latest backup did nothing to resolve this problem. Are you ever going to fix it? And the latest update also didn’t fix the problem with being unable to see root directory files unless you are using WinRAR (not a free program) either. What is happening with this plugin? Don’t you care about your users at all? This is a completely unacceptable amount of time to have to wait for you to fix TWO bugs.
