Hi there, I manage a number of self-hosted sites with Jetpack. I recently updated a few of my sites to WordPress 5.2.1, and now I can’t manage plugins with Calypso (the desktop app). It says I need to enable Jetpack Manage.

If I click the button to enable it, I get a redirect to the Jetpack dashboard. If I log into the server and use WP CLI to list the Jetpack modules, manage is not present.

Comparatively, I have some sites still on WP 4.9.9 and I can manage my plugins just fine. If I list modules on these sites, manage is present.

So somewhere between 4.9.9 and 5.2.1, this module disappeared and broke part of the Calypso functionality. I can’t seem to find any documentation on this, but I wondered if anyone at Jetpack has any insight into what’s going on. Thanks.

What is the URL of one or two of the affected sites?

Thanks for the reply, James. You can compare MPN.co, which is now missing the manage module, with DavidonSeseri.com, which still connects fine to Calypso.

The second one doesn’t appear to exist. What is the correct URL?

Meanwhile at MPN.co I’m not seeing any reason why it wouldn’t work. According to tests from our end, Jetpack is working properly there, and the JSON API module is enabled, which is “Jetpack Manage” in this case.

Do you notice any difference if you temporarily deactivate Wordfence?

Sorry, the second url is DavidsonSeseri.com.

The plot thickens: I found that one of the sites in my multisite installation, thisisrhymesandreasons.com, still connected fine. I could manage plugins and themes. This site shares a multisite with MPN.co. All the other sites on that multisite weren’t working.

Then, I disconnected and re-connected a different site in that multisite, and now I can’t manage plugins or themes for thisisrhymesandreasons.com in the desktop app.

I also have a site called FedUX.dev that won’t connect, and for that one I have changed to the default theme, even deleted and re-installed Jetpack.

Meanwhile, I have a site at secr.trade where I just activated and connected Jetpack, and I can manage themes and plugins fine. That site is running WordPress 5.0.4. So it really seems to be related to this latest update.

We definitely don’t have any known problems like this under WordPress 5.2 or 5.2.1, many sites I’ve checked since are working just fine.

Have you tried reconnecting the network’s primary site? If that didn’t make a difference, what is its URL?

I just disconnected and reconnected MPN.co, which is the main site, and reconnected. It didn’t fix the problem.

I manage another wp installation at secr.trade. This one connects to Calypso fine, and I even updated to 5.2.1 and the connection is still good. So you’re right, it must not be related to the update.

It seems pretty significant to me that on the sites that don’t connect properly, I can ssh in and run wp jetpack module list and the ‘manage’ module just isn’t there at all. It doesn’t matter if I install a fresh copy of Jetpack from the server.

Now when I go into modules in the filesystem, and open manage.php, it says that manage is no longer a module, that it’s ‘baked into Jetpack’ now. Still, why does it show on one site and not the other? Both are the same version.

I also ran wp jetpack reset options and jetpack reset modules, reconnected and it didn’t help.

Yeah, there hasn’t been a manage module for a few versions. It’s built-in now, and the only component of it that can be switched on/off is the json-api module.

This is definitely pretty weird and random, and I’m sorry about that. Would you please reach out to us at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support so we can take a closer look?
