• Having spoken to my web host provider they seem unable to help with this situation. I’m getting Fatal error ‘cannot redeclare add-option_whitelist() It appears plugin.php on line 2180 is the problem when trying to login to the admin area of WordPress.

Plugins have been disabled – the site is now visible but can’t make any changes.

    Any help really appreciated.

  • It looks like there was a problem during an update. File plugin.php is in WordPress Core and the system needs it no matter if you have active plugins or not.

If your hosting is providing automatical backups, you can reverse changes and try again. If not — this is another thing to take care after you will restore your site.

You can make a manual update:

Wow sounds epic for just one file. not sure Im confident enough to go through this process. I can see this ending in disaster.
Why are WordPress updates so complicated?

Can you recommend anyone who provides a service to rectify this problem?

Usually is not and manually you don’t need to make any changes in files.
In general, you just need to go and copy files from the new version to your server.

If your hosting company have backups, try to restore the site from it.
