• When I try to login to my site, I am taken to the “not found” page: “Apologies, but the page you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help.” I cannot access the administration UI.

Also, my login page seems to be void of any styling. Instead of the WP logo and the login form centered nicely on the page, it is just text only. It was working fine just a couple of days ago.

Apparently my client is able to login just fine, though. I’ve tried clearing my cookies and cache, and cookies are enabled. I tried logging in from a tablet on a different network, and still get the same error.

I have access to FTP, and have tried removing my captcha plugin (SI Captcha) and Better WP Security, but that didn’t work either.

    Any suggestions?

  • You could rename the entire plugins folder (to disable all plugins) and rename the current theme folder (not the folder named “themes”) to default back to Twenty Thirteen. It’s worth a shot ??

Do you know what version of WordPress you are running?

This is a live site, so I’d like to save disabling plugins and changing the theme as a last resort. I cannot reproduce this error on my local dev version of the site, and as I said, my client can login just fine. :-/

my client can login just fine. :-/

Have you cleared your browser cache and cookies, tried another browser, restarted your computer and router/modem?

Yes to all of the above.

So I found that if I erase all of the added information in my htaccess file from Better WP Security (between # BEGIN Better WP Security and # END Better WP Security), I can then login using the wp-login.php URL. Once Better WP Security adds that information back, though, I get the same problem…

Going to try and see if I can turn off certain settings in Better WP Security and see if that works… I’ll report back.

    That sounds promising :)!

So, I tried several things on Better WP Security, and nothing really worked. Then I noticed that in Settings>General my client had put some capital letters in the site URL… I changed it back to all lowercase, re-saved permalinks, and re-saved Better WP Security settings. Everything works now.

Not sure why having capital letters in the site URL would cause such an issue… Anyone heard of this causing problems before? Looking at W3 standards, site URLS should not be case sensitive, but paths could be…

Either way… looks like I need to add this to a list of “do not touch” sections for my client… sigh.
