Can’t login after upgrade to 2.3 ERROR; WordPress requires Cookies but …

  • Hi,

    I have upgraded to 2.3 and cannot login.

    I am stuck with the:

    ERROR; WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked

    message in the login box. I have tried:
    1. Assuming it was a bad password and phpMyAdmin edited the Amin account using an MD5 generator to change my password.
    2. Re-booted
    3. Emptied my browsers satchel, brief case, lunch box, cache, settings
    4. Tried two other browsers, also reset them
    5. Tried a download of the .ZIP instead of the UX flavour-compress in case one was snapped.
    6. Followed the instructions for deleting all my WP (NOT just over-writing as per the initial install), then re-uploaded all fresh shiny 2.3
    7. Praying.
    8. Swearing at my keyboard

    All stubbornly leave me with:

    ERROR; WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked.

    This is VERY soon after 2.3 went live so I know I may not get a reply right away, but, if there is some kind soul who knows that this is, pretty plesase, can you reply?

    I am 100% stuck.

  • I have the same problem, but the patch is not works for me. I can log in but blank screen comes up. I tried the patch w/o commenting above mentioned lines without any luck.

    I have just upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3.
    Client: Linux with firefox and Windows XP with Firefox and IE6

    @kkemenczy – My understanding is the patch fixes a test for cookie support. If you are logging in, then I am guessing that this patch or the lack of it is not the problem. I think you need cookies to log in at all. Did you run the upgrade.php – don’t ask me how – it’s explained properly on this site and I might make a mistake – guessing you did already, just suggesting in case. Good luck

    I did clean install… both my internet server and my local server and I get this error on both. Is the path to the cookie problem? I’ve installed both on subdomain…

    @alanfluff – you are right commenting out the lines help me to leg in but blank pages comes up. This is another issue. I tried several things but after two days fight I will reinstall the whole thing. thanks your help anyway.

    @miskolino – I believe 2.3 has an extra ‘check-we-have-cookie-support’ test built in (cool), but the test breaks if WP is not installed in the root. The patch fixes this or removes this extra test – not sure which. Sorry if this no help – I don’t know much more myself. Good luck.

    thanks anyway… i wander how many blogs has been instaled in subdomain??? 100K+? And all of them will not be able to use 2.3… can this bug (it is BUG!) be solved by some of the WP programmers?

    My blog is in a sub-directory, not root. The patch fixed this problem for me.

    Thx Ryan for the wp-login.php patch. Why hasn’t this patch already been applied to the download version of WP2.3? I downloaded and installed WP2.3 on Friday 9/28 and ended up not being able to log into my blog because of this cookie error that was reported over 5 days ago.

    Patch did’nt work for me either… why don’t WP team put a solution in home page? its a real pain to read 41 comments to find the solution… anyway.. im still in dark… i can’t login ??

    Evjaka, just download the patch and drag it into your Worpress root folder–so easy even a girl can do it!

    I went Here and downloaded the zip file with the changes for wp-login.php and wp-settings.php

    i can login, but i’m still getting a white screen even for the index.php page… i have since reverted back to to the original files.

    i’ve also tried to do the comment line hack, which didnt work either.

    any thoughts?

    @zmirza – Sorry you are stuck – my comment, further up this page, starting “@kkemenczy – My understanding is the patch fixes a test…” explains what this patch/thread is addressing – sorry it’s not fixed your problem.
