    Hi Team,

We have only just this week installed WordFence, and as part of this we implemented 2FA on our wordpress site which setup and seemed to operate ok, however a few days after install I have gone to log into my WP admin area and i either get one of two things happen.

Error: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again

Or the page refreshes when clicking login/submit.

Ironically we also use Gravity forms on our site, and clients are reporting the same issue (page refreshes) when they submit their query form. I am unsure if this is related or if Gravity Forms has updated and an issue has arisen there but does seem rather odd the two issues are presenting somewhat the same.

I have tried disabling WordFence Plugin as well as our Admin page redirect Plugin as I read somewhere that would cause issues but alas I have been unable to get in at all, with the same problem presenting itself.

Just checking two other sites i deployed to at the same time and those two are also presenting with the same issue

Any Ideas or suggestions for me to try, as I see from the forum, I am not the only person having this issue.

    Many thanks in advance

    Hello, @ideliver

    Thanks for your patience.

You mentioned you tried to disable Wordfence and the same issue occurred. With Wordfence deactivated, are you still seeing “Error: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again”, or are you primarily seeing the page refresh with no change after using the login button?

You also mentioned trying to revert the login redirect with no change. If you’re still running into issues logging in, I would recommend setting the login form back to the default login page and try logging in multiple times with Wordfence active. Try an incognito tab and another browser. Also try using https, http, as well as with and without www in the domain to see if you notice any difference. If the issue still persists, try deactivating Wordfence by renaming the wordfence folder in wp-content/plugins (rename wordfence to wordfence_temp for example to deactivate it) and see if you still cannot login. Remember to try a few times after disabling Wordfence.

If you cannot log in at that point, there is likely another conflicting plugin or theme involved that is causing the issue. You could check your browser console at the time you try to log in for any errors there.

    Thanks,
    Scott
