I can’t get into my site… I get this error when I enter my email and password –
ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.”

What doesn’t happen to me on my other two sites that are built with the same plugins and theme…

I use Wordfence’s 2FA and don’t use reCAPTCHA… (But I don’t even get to the 2FA page… I am still stuck on the username and password page with this error…)
I also use the plugin “wps-hide-login”.

In my FTP, when I change the name of Wordfence and wps-hide-login, I still have the same issue and can’t access my site…

Can you help me? why this is happening?

    Thank you ??

Hi @avscor, thanks for getting in touch and I’m sorry to see you’re having a problem logging in.

If the Wordfence folder is renamed as you’ve done, it’ll prevent any involvement from our 2FA/reCAPTCHA checks altogether. This is the suggested method of gaining access with only a Username/Password combination when a customer loses their 2FA device as we don’t perform user management that’d affect access to a site when Wordfence is disabled.

Therefore, if your Username/Password isn’t working with Wordfence disabled, they could indeed be incorrectly typed, have been changed by somebody else with administrative access, or another plugin is intervening when you try to log in. I would try first disabling all plugins by renaming their folders as we’ve seen this problem before with minify/combine style plugins that are still loading our Login Security code and preventing the login.

Let me know what you find out,
    Peter.
