    Updated to WP 4.0 yesterday.
    Updated all plugins.

Today when I went to my WP site expected to see login lockdown screen as usual, but to my surprise, my site was active (it’s still a demo site, so it should be locked and password entry only).

I couldn’t log into the admin dashboard from the website.

I read the log-in troubles file here on the WP site.
I moved the plugins folder elsewhere.
I renamed the WP directory so nobody can surf to it.

Now when I go to this URL, it brings up a blank page.

At least it is not accessible for public view now, however it is still not accessible to me to edit.

I am having problems logging in through FTP so had to do this directly from file manager in cpanel.

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do next? Reinstall everything?
I will contact my hostprovider about the FTP login, but would appreciate any help.

  • Check the error log.

I looked at the cpanel error log for this domain, but the error log seems to show only dates in 2013

Is there another log I can check through cpanel?

I clear cookies every time I close the browser (Chrome), and manually delete history, so I don’t think it’s a browser issue.

ok – I have looked more closely into this after a break. I only tried to log into wordpress again today because envato send an email around advising that some sliders in their themes were a security risk : O

I found some other threads relating to this issue (it seems a lot of people are having problems with logging in again after upgrading to WP 4.0).

    ISSUE SOLVED
I have been able to access my site via cpanel, so using the file manager there, I renamed the plugins folder to plugins-deactivated (as suggested in the troubleshooting sticky post).

Then I made a new folder called plugins. I moved two plugins there – one was login-lockdown, and the other was wp-maintenance-mode. With the login-lockdown, I was able to access my WP dashboard, and was able to activate this plugin. Then I activated the wp-maintenance-mode plugin and edited the settings.

When I visited my site while logged in, my theme layout was messed up, but that’s because I had renamed my theme so twenty-fourteen would be the default. I renamed my theme folder back to its original name, activated it in the WP dashboard, and it’s all fine.

I just need to move some more plug-ins (one at a time, and check afterwards) and I should be all honky-dory again.

I just checked, and my wp-maintenance-mode plugin is working again (when I’m logged out). If I use https://mywordpresssite/wp-login.php I get the login lockdown screen.

So hopefully this post will help someone else. I am marking it resolved.

Cheers. Back to being sleepy again.
