Can't link to comments page

I have integrated a wordpress blog into an existing site. I have created the index.php, sidebar.php, header.php, footer.php and comments.php. I am a complete newbie to php and used some tutorials on the web to do this integration so I am learning as I go. There are a couple of issues I am trying to work out and one is that when I click the comments link at the end of any post, it does not take me to a comment page. There is no way I can see the comments. What is missing?
