• Help Needed!
I’ve viewed several other forums, conducted many web searches, and chatted with others regarding my issues and have not received any help.

I am unable to install plugins or themes with my new WP install (version 4.5.3).
My host provider says it’s me and/or the WP files, so they have not been much help.

Here are some of the things I’ve tried so far…with no luck.
    Disabled all plugins
    Changed themes
    Reinstalled WP twice
Re-uploaded files from a fresh download
    Checked FTP file permissions
Checked & verified information in config.php file
Checked & verified information in .htaccess file
Checked the site URL in the WP Dashboard -> General Settings area
    Checked folder/file permissions through FTP

When trying to install new theme or plugin, I receive the following error message:
Download failed. error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

I am able to upload themes via FTP, but unable to view the site.
When trying to view the site, I only get a blank (white) screen.

Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

When trying to view the site, I only get a blank (white) screen.

Both PHP errors and database errors can manifest as a white screen. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
    (1) Bad theme
    (2) Bad plugin
    (3) Bad install/upgrade
    (4) you exhausted the memory limit
    (5) It could also mean that there is an issue with your web hosting server. 1 and 2 are more common.

    – Since the problem can be caused by any number of things, check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message. If you need help locating them, ask your hosting provider to help you with that.

    Thank you Tara,
I’ve addressed the first 3 items in your list several times and still receive the same outcome.

I’m not sure how to look into the memory limit issue.
I have contacted my hosting company to see if they can investigate the problem.

Also, while you are at them, ask them to check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message.

That error is a problem with the version of OpenSSL and -or- cURL that’s being used on your server. Be sure and address that issue with your host.. It’s an important one.

    Thanks you Clayton.
Could you provide more information as to what the issue with OpenSSL/cURL is?

I want to be able to explain more to my host provider (they are not too good at customer service or assistance – but that’s another issue).

Samuel Wood (Otto) explains the issue in a similar conversation from about a year ago. Short, and right to the point. Rather than repeating it, I’ll point you to the thread it’s in..

    Thanks again Clayton.
I’ll share this information with my host provider.
