Can't get to my wp-admin page – 403 error message

Delete the .htaccess file in your website root folder and the .htaccess file in your wp-admin folder. You should be able to login. If you have added any custom .htaccess code, such as IP blocking .htaccess code then check to make sure your IP address is correct/current.

Were you able to log back in? I forgot to mention that after you check for any custom code, such as IP address blocking custom code, that you repeat the standard BPS Setup steps after you have logged back in.

BPS setup steps:

1. Click the AutoMagic buttons on the Security Modes page.
2. Activate Root and wp-admin BulletProof Modes on the Security Modes page.
3. Go to the Login Security page and choose your Login Security options and click the Save Options buttons.
4. Setup complete.

Thanks for your help, it seems it was some custom rewrite rules in “public_html/.htaccess” that were causing this. As per your advice I deleted this and was then able to login.

Sadly I had also deleted some of BPS created .htaccess files so my BPS was totally out of whack.

I think I will probably just reinstall and start again as I am totally confused as to what has been done or undone by my actions and so just going step by step through this will get it done quicker.
I am hoping I don’t create this problem again, but even if that should happen I can at least refer back here ??

To make things simple and to isolate possible problematic custom .htaccess code this is a good approach.

Go to Custom Code and cut (not copy) all custom .htaccess code to a Notepad or Notepad++ document and save it.

Click the Save Root Custom Code button.

Go to the Security Modes page, click the Create secure.htaccess File AutoMagic button and activate Root folder BulletProof Mode.

At this point you will have only standard BPS .htaccess code in your root .htaccess file.

Then add any custom .htaccess code in stages by only adding 1 bit/block of custom code at a time to 1 Custom Code text box, rinse and repeat the steps above and test everything. If everything is ok then add another bit/block of custom code, rinse and repeat…
