Can’t get to dev Dashboard

I installed the plugin and created a staging site in the folder dev and the option WordPress in subdirectory was checked.. Ican get to site.com/dev/and see the orange staging site bar on the top however when selecting something from the wordpress menu (eg “Dashboard”) I get redirected to the live site’s wp-admin.
Even when forcing the URL back to include /dev/ in the request, this throws out to a login page.
I have tried disabling a redirection plugin and several variations of .htaccess changes as well. Any ideas what may be occurring?
