Can't get Magic Fields to Work

I’ve been trying for a couple of hours and I’ve just about given up. I can’t seem to get MF to work. I’ve tried both version of it and no luck.
The plugin installs with no issues and I am able to create write panels and fields. When I create a new post from the write panel I’ve created, everything is there – in short, everything in WordPress seems to function perfectly, but I can’t seem to get any results when I try to get a value from a field…
I have echo “The Field: “. get(‘job_class_tax_status_tax_rate’); just under the the_content() in the single.php – trying the simplest form at the moment. But I get no value for this…
I’m sure I’m missing something very basic here. Does anyone have a good working example that I can study?? I’ve tried to follow the tutorial where: https://magicfields.org/category/tutorial/ but it’s just not working for me…
