• I was trying to change the file functions.php to make a field not required according to this and it didn’t work. I keep getting the error message “Parse error: syntax error. Unexpect ‘<‘ …”. I wanted to back out of the site to restore it. Now when I try to go into the site, I just get that error. How can I restore my site? I have Backup Buddy.

You’ll need to extract a copy of functions.php from your backup and then upload it via FTP to replace the version that you mis-edited.

Thank you. How can I go about this? I can’t get into the dashboard.

Did you ever download one of your backups? You *may* be able to download one via your hosting control panel.

If not, download a new copy of your theme, extract functions.php, and upload it over the theme’s functions.php you edited via FTP or from your hosting control panel’s file manager app.

No, I have never done it. My host is hostgator. Do they support this?

Thanks for staying with me. I tried Hostgator support. He suggested restoring the theme. He cannot restore files from BackupBuddy. I’m afraid restoring the theme could wipe out all or some of the work I did on the site. So I opened a ticket with BackupBuddy. They don’t seem to have live support. I’m now waiting to hear from them.

    I’m suggesting the same thing.

download a new copy of your theme, extract functions.php, and upload it over the theme’s functions.php you edited via FTP or from your hosting control panel’s file manager app.

Okay. That’s sounds like a good idea.
