Cant get advanced search filters to work

Hi I am having trouble with the advanced search filters I have created a field for music genre to categorise users. On the search page it shows up with a checkbox named music type. I thought a dropdown would appear for visitors to select a genre. I then selected the checkbox and then type in the genre but this isn’t working either.

Any help would be appreciated. I need to get this basic functionality sorted or look at alternatives.
