Cant find homepage in Google results

I have installed the Yoast SEO plugin but whenever I google my site, it only displays category archive pages for each archive e.g. /mydomain.com/category1 and also it shows tags only e.g. mydomain.com/tag1/. I can never find a link to simply mydomain.com
I am struggling how to find out how to make my homepage appear, rather than simply the categories and tags.
Can somebody point me in the direction of a good website to make my blog SEO friendly?
Also, my website is just my blog i.e. there is never going to be anymore content, so the website is hosted in the root directory, not sure if that makes a difference.
