Today I blocked a hostname using Blocking page and after some hours Wordfence Blocking page showed that 175 blocks registered.

I opened Live Traffic page and tried to filter it using Hostname so that I can know which IP addressses, etc were blocked using my custom hostname block settings.

I was shocked to see that there is no option available to filter Live Traffic records based on Hostname. We have all other options like useragent, IP address, referrer, etc but Hostname is not present.

Its surprising when we have option to block hostnames then why Wordfence not provide option to filter Live Traffic records by Hostname?

How we are supposed to find out all hostname blocks in Live Traffic page?

    Its very irritating.

Please add this must have option.

  • Hi @yet-another-wp-user,

This is related to your other question, does hostname lookup use more resources.

Hostname lookup is a slow process, so Wordfence will only fetch the hostname for the rows you are viewing within live traffic.

That means, if you were to filter by hostname, you would only get a filter of the rows you are currently viewing.

In order to filter using all live traffic events by hostname, a hostname lookup would need to be run on every single unique IP address within wp_wfhits. (Which is just not feasible)

I understand but what’s the harm in providing the option to filter by hostname? If a user needs that functionality, he’ll use it otherwise not.

It’s a feature that Wordfence can definitely look into! I’ll post a request to the team to see what they think about it.

it is not difficult to implement, but will require the user to wait around while Wordfence fetches all the hostnames from every single IP address within live traffic.

On sites with large amounts of traffic, this will probably take minutes to complete. Not to mention, that it is constantly sending out packets which would probably make the site inaccessible for the time Wordfence is fetching the hostnames.

But this feature is required for users who are manually blocking certain hostnames.

    Hi again,

I’ve made a feature request already, but the trade-off between searching hostnames and saving the hostnames is just not worth it.

In general, you will have a few IPs with similar hostnames, every other hostname will be unique.

^^ Blocking a hostname and searching for it in Live Traffic will be very useful and essential if we are getting hit by some hacker or spam IP addresses from same hostname.

Latest Wordfence version 7.2.1 shows following in changelog:

Improvement: Added a help link to the mode display when a host disabling Live Traffic is active.

Is it what I wanted? Has the ability to filter Live Traffic records based on Hostname been added in the new version?
