My permalinks include /index.php/ in them, which I want to remove. I have followed the instructions here and created .htaccess and uploaded it via FTP.

My install of WP was via my host’s Control Panel (Parallels) rather than a manual FTP upload – therefore I’m not sure which directory .htaccess should be in? I’ve tried several, logging out and back into WP each time, but none have changed my permalink options.

I currently have the file in /siteapps/WordPress-94030/htdocs/ – which is the folder that also contains /wp-admin, /wp-content, etc. /siteapps is the top-level directory where my host installs any applications I choose from the control panel.

Can anyone suggest where I should be uploading it?

The .htaccess file should be in the root directory where WordPress installed. In your case the should be in “htdocs” directory. You can refer the following WordPress documentation to get more information about .htaccess configuration.

Thanks for your response. I have .htaccess in “htdocs”, but I think the issue is making it writable – I can’t reset the permissions, and have asked my host’s tech support if mod_rewrite is enabled.
