I recently removed BPS according to instructions, in order to troubleshoot a slow admin panel issue.

I cannot seem to re-enable it. I have even re-installed from scratch. I click the two auto magic buttons then the two radio buttons and every time I get this error:

Failed to Activate BulletProof Security Root Folder Protection! Your Website is NOT protected with BulletProof Security!

Warning: copy(/home/carseatb/public_html/.htaccess) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/carseatb/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bulletproof-security/admin/core/options.php on line 97

It seems to overwrite the wp-admin htaccess file, but not the main htaccess file. I have a minimum set of plugins active at the moment, and have added no new ones and haven’t made any other changes, at least not intentionally.

    Any ideas?

The error means that this file: /bulletproof-security/admin/htaccess/secure.htaccess cannot be copied to this folder: /home/carseatb/public_html/.htaccess

    Troubleshooting steps:
Check the permissions of the /public_html/ folder. The permissions should be 755 or 705 (if your host server allows 705 permissions).
Check that the Owner of the /public_html/ folder is the same Owner for all of your other WordPress folders.

Also try deleting the existing /public_html/.htaccess file first using either FTP or your web host control panel file manager and then activate root folder BulletProof Mode
