• Hello everyone,

I am moving my website from other cms to WordPress. What I am trying to do is change permalinks in order to reflect the old ones, the ones from the previous cms.

But, any time I try to edit permalink, I am running into a problem.
Example: my old url, on old website is: domain.com/english/disover (it’s multilingual website)

This same url on WordPress is: domain.com/discover/

When I try to change to the old version I cannot do it. What happens is, WordPress deletes “/” and changes it to: domain.com/englishdiscover

Why is this happening, and how can I overcome this problem?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Nash

  • Hi Nash,

You’ll probably have to edit your permalinks settings for WordPress.

    1. Log in to WordPress.
    2. Go to Settings >> Permalinks.
    3. Choose the custom structure radio button.
    4. Type /english/%postname%/ into the field.
    5. Click the blue “Save Changes” button.

Keep in mind that this will put “/english/” at the beginning of every one of your URLs.

You can also consider using a multilingual plugin to achieve the same result as you had previously. The one I like to use often for the majority of my customers is call WPML. You can find it at WPML.org unfortunately it’s not a free plugin but for the price it is really feature rich and very well supported. It will allow you setup multiple languages and it will automatically adjust the permalink structure to include the directory path for the language.

    Hope that helps

I also agree with @jchechik. Great suggestion. It may be a little complicated to setup though.

I am using WPML plugin. For default language, which is English, my url structure is domain.com/whatever_category/post. But my old cms created a “folder” for each category… so for example, the url can look like this: domain.com/1stcategory/2ndcategory/post… now, I don’t have that anymore… what i have is domain.com/category_name/post

If I go ahead and edit the permalinks setting into /english/%postname%/ than this will reflect the other language as well, which I don’t want.

Anyway, here is the link, so you can see what I am talking about => wordpress-24506-nenadlekan.vpsapps.net

Change the language in the language bar to see what I am talking about.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Regards,
    N.
