  • I’m having this problem also but there is a workaround.

On the widgets page, hover your mouse over “Available Widgets” and you’ll see a small up arrow appear to the right. It’s not obvious, but this is an accordion menu and works the same as the widgets do – they open and close. Click the up arrow and the menu will contract. The “Inactive Widgets” menu heading will now appear directly below the screen and you should now be able to move your widgets freely into that section.

    Please re-read what Tara wrote:

My suggestion would be to start your own thread. That way you stand a good chance of getting full attention to your specific issue. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole. Works for me and much better than having to enable accessibility mode. Thanks.

@andrew, no one has been able to help with this issue and until people starting posting here (besides Tara), I thought I was totally alone in this. Yes, I did try to search, but came up with too many hits (100’s) of mainly much older versions of WordPress or NOT the problem. I am grateful for the sharing from others.

Thank you for your tip, unfortunately this dont work for me =(

    I can’t drag widgets to inactive v. 4.2.2

I had to recreate in inactive and then delete!

I love it when people say we need 1000 posts about the same issue. We don’t. We just need this one so that developers can see, oh, yeah, it is happening to lots of people across lots of platforms which means IT IS A CODING ISSUE with 4.2.1 and 4.2.2.

I have this same problem on 190 sites with different domains, hosting companies, server configurations and whatnot.

If you post your issue in threads then you are only visible to people who happen to be looking in those threads.

If you create your own thread then you are visible to everyone browsing the forum. If your thread runs off the first page in the forum you are still stuck onto a ‘no replies’ list. Some volunteers answer threads there with a higher priority.

I don’t think any one fundamentally disagrees with how forums operate.

A workaround, not ideal but it works until that bug is fixed, is drag and drop your widgets into other widget areas via the customizer.

    It is a known bug.
As a workaround try zooming out your browser window. It helped me.

thanks, zooming out is a work-around too.

It worked for me to delete Jetpack, though I suspect that’s only because that took away several widgets and displayed the Inactive Widgets area on the same screen as the one I was moving.

Same problems with being unable to drag to Inactive. Sometimes I could scroll down all or part of the way, but it just would not “release” into the inactive widget area. Other times when I tried, the active widget could be moved horizontally, but not scroll at all. The suggestion by ozgirl57 comment #17 worked for me.
*However* – anyone who is having the problem described in this thread may want to check all “widget areas” for their site. When attempting to move a widget from an active widget area on the right to the inactive widget area – and when it refused to go to inactive – unknown to me it was actually moving it from one active widget area to another!
For example, I was removing an enhanced text widget from my Primary Top Side Bar to the inactive area, and it did not go. I later found this widget plopped down in the Pages Top Widget area. I tried to move it from there to inactive, still no-go, but then I found it had migrated into the Archive-Like Pages Top Widget area. And so on.
There are only a few Widget Areas that I actively use, so it was a shock to find it in these other areas where I previously had nothing.

The author of original post (OP) seems to have the issue resoled.
