Need to extract month from custom date field

Hi, I’m using Advanced Custom Fields to add a Datepicker custom field. I want to display it using this plugin, which I can do like this:
[field date custom=true]However, I need to display the long month (“August”) instead of just the date string (“2016-08-24”). How do I do this? I basically need to be able to do a date format on it. I can modify the field in ACF to make it store the date in whatever format is easiest. Thanks!
