can’t customize nav menu color/typography in header bar

I’m using Make (free) from Theme Foundry and custom options for menu color/typography won’t work when my nav menu is in the header bar. The menu links work, but won’t highlight, change color, or anything on hover or when selected. It’s quite maddening, and I absolutely want to keep navigation in the header bar, not the site header, for a variety of reasons.

When I change menu colors/typography, it only works in the nav menu is in the site header, not the header bar; if I customize color of text in the header bar, it only changes the social media icons, not the nave menu links.
