This is my first time installing wordpress, and the host/server I’m trying to install it on is phpwebhosting.

I am attempting to install using the instructions for phpMyAdmin (none of the other install instructions looked even remotely like what I had available to me).

The install instructions want me to create a new database, which I was able to do, and then create a new user, which I was not able to do. As far as I can tell, there is no where in the control panel at phpwebhosting to create a new user.

What do I do? How should I proceed? I contacted the support desk at phpwebhosting, but they have yet to get back to me.

Why is it important to create a new user after creating a database?

Also, when I tried to create a database called “wordpress” I was informed that one already existed, but it was no where to be found.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I can’t be the only one to run into this problem.

    Thanks.

Oh, and apparently I’m using WP v. 2.9.2, not 2.9.1. Sorry for any confusion.

Only specific users with the correct access privileges can access a database. WordPress is classed as a user.

I#’d also suggest you choose something a little less obvious for your database name.

Right now the default database name at phpwebhosting is the first half of the domain name.

I wasn’t going to use the default database because the install instructions said I should create a new database. Is it okay to use the default database, or is that also too obvious?

If the default database is just sitting there, I’d suggest using it. A partial domain name is still better than “wordpress”.

So then the question is, do I need to worry about creating a new user, or can I just skip that part?

    I think that’s where I’ve got the biggest hang-up.

You have to have at least 1 user with full privileges.

Okay, that makes sense. What I don’t know is if I need to worry about creating a new user (which phpwebhosting doesn’t seem to let me do), or if I can/should use the userID that I use to log into the control panel at phpwebhosting and PHPMyAdmin.

I mean, if I can’t make a new user, I probably don’t have any other choice, I’m just not sure if I should be worried about just having one user (for security reasons), or if it’s fine. I CAN change the database password independent of the password I use to login to the control panel.

You’re best asking phpwebhosting about this. They must have some process in place to allow a db user to be created. Otherwise all the dbs are going to be pretty useless.

Yeah, I sent them a query about two days ago. I guess I’ll just wait to hear back from them.

    Thanks for all your help.
