When trying to connect Site Kit to GA, I receive the following message:
“An existing analytics tag was found on your site with the ID UA-xxxxxxx. If later on you decide to replace this tag, Site Kit can place the new tag for you. Make sure you remove the old tag first.”

I have taken the following steps:
    1. Opened a new browser in incognito mode, logged into website and disconnected the Analytics module (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit > Disconnect Analytics from Site Kit)
    3. Check the source code of my website for any Analytics tracking ID (searched for “UA-” reference). I found two occurrences – one I recognize in GA and have access to, and the other I didn’t recognize. The one I didn’t recognize appears to be linked to site kit (I replaced the actual tag with XXXXXX below):
    action=googlesitekit_proxy_permissions&nonce=54e744635c”,”usingProxy”:true,”trackingAllowed”:false,”trackingEnabled”:false,”trackingID”:”UA-XXXXXXXXX-X”};

Many thanks for opening a support topic. The notice you encounter is to say that Site Kit will use that existing Analytics property to report on your site.

If you’re looking to remove that snippet we’d be happy to help you ensure you can use your preferred Analytics property. As you’ve already performed various troubleshooting steps let’s try the below in order to locate the source:

    1. Login to your site from a Chrome browser incognito window.
    2. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”. (This will temporarily deactivate other plugins and switch to a default theme – for you only, as a logged in user).
    4. Check your sites source code, I suspect you won’t find a snippet placed
    5. From back in your Health Check plugin click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to any additional plugins, before then visiting your sites source code once more.
    6. Enable your plugins one by one while rechecking your sites source code each time until you locate the snippet. You’ll need to refresh/reload the source code page each time
    7. If you can’t locate the existing snippet you wish to remove try activating your present theme from within troubleshooting mode before checking the source code once mode (Please refresh the page before checking, and start with the “Google Analytics Germanized” plugin)

Once you locate the source of the additional Analytics snippet you can exit troubleshooting mode afterwards.

Let me know if you have any questions on the above.

Ok – my apologies for the delay in completing the steps above. It’s actually the Google Site Kit plugin that is adding the snippet. So there is a snippet which has a valid GA tag, but the site kit has one I don’t recognize, and I’m not sure where it’s coming from. Should I copy the code here?

    Another question regarding Site Kit:
I have auto ads set up through AdSense. Does Site Kit add the code to the AMP pages or do I have to copy the code to the AMP pages between <head></head> tags and after the <body> tag as instructed by Google AdSense?
    Thanks!

You can check the Site Kit placed snippet by navigating to “Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Analytics > Edit” from the your WordPress admin panel.

I have auto ads set up through AdSense. Does Site Kit add the code to the AMP pages or do I have to copy the code to the AMP pages between <head></head> tags and after the <body> tag as instructed by Google AdSense?

Good question. Site Kit inserts the Auto ads code for AMP on your AMP URLs and the regular Auto ads code on your non AMP URLs. You don’t have to manually insert the Auto ads for AMP snippet into your site.

Let me know if you have any further queries.

    Regarding your first response:

You can check the Site Kit placed snippet by navigating to “Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Analytics > Edit” from the your WordPress admin panel.

I’m confused (which is sometimes the case) – the whole issue is that I can’t get Analytics connected in Site Kit. When I view the source, I find a tag generated by Site Kit which I don’t see in my Analytics account. When I go to “Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Analytics > Edit”, I get “Setup Incomplete: Continue Module Setup”. When I click that, I’m led to a screen with “Configure Analytics” greyed out. I completed form in which I provided the URL and other info, did you see that?

Regarding the Auto Ads, they are not showing up on my mobile.

If you have paid services for someone to help me, I’d be willing to do that as I’d like to get this issue resolved, particularly with the Ads.

    Thank you.

If you find the Analytics setup options are greyed out this is because Site Kit is using an already placed snippet on your site. As an Analytics snippet existed before setting up Site Kit the plugin uses that snippet.

If you follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned previously you may be able to determine the source of the snippet, in particular check the “Google Analytics Germanized” plugin. Once you remove the non Site Kit placed snippet you can then select your preferred Anlytics property to connect to, from within the Analytics settings.

Regarding the Auto Ads, they are not showing up on my mobile.

I do encounter ads on your site, from mobile and desktop, including your AMP URLs. I would suggest checking with the AdSense Help Center if you find any issues with ads, all looks good with your setup.

Let me know if you have any further queries on this, or if you’re unable to locate your Analytics snippet.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. I wonder if it’s a cache issue regarding why I don’t see the ads on my mobile. Anyway, glad they’re showing up for you. ??

I’ll try to find how the analytics snippet is getting placed on the site.

    Thanks again.

No problem, feel free to reach out should you encounter anymore issues.

In relation to ads I can’t be sure, although I do see ads from my side when checking once more today. Maybe try another browser.
