Can’t clone to a Sub Subdomain

I need to clone a MU site to a sub sub-domain (sub2.sub1.domain.com), but I get an error that says only letters and numbers can be used.
Why is there this limit with . too ?
Can I safely remove this check from the code directly? or will it cause some issues?
