Somehow someone has got hold of my admin username, but 2FA is keeping them at bay.

I can change the admin username via phpmyadmin but when I login it with the 2FA it send me back to the username and password to login again.

How can I fix this please.

    Hi @slisje,

Wordfence should be referring to the user by ID when it references 2FA rather than be affected by the change of username directly. Did you change user_login, user_nicename, and/or display_name manually in the database only or were there other field changes too?

Renaming the Wordfence plugin folder to “wordfence_bak” should allow you to sign in as normal, then reactivate 2FA for your user from scratch after renaming it back to “wordfence” and refreshing your admin dashboard. If you cannot log in with Wordfence renamed, then the issue will be with WordPress’ understanding of your user account since the name change and more action may be required.

Let me know what you find out and I’ll be happy to help further should you need it.

    Peter.

@wfpeter I changed the user_login. The user_nicename and display_name are different anyway. But I just noticed (it was hidden with smaller window) that the user_activation_key is empty. Not sure if that’s normal or not.

I will try the renaming method.

@wfpeter ok, so it still redirects to login even with Wordfence disabled, so its not a Wordfence issue. But still no idea how to over come this. Thank you for your quick response.
