This is a brand new WordPress install version 6.3, no additional plugins activated. Using the Twenty Twenty-Three theme. I am unable to change the status of a post or page under All Posts > Quick Edit. When I click the update button the circle just spins and spins. I also tried switching to the 2022 theme, same behavior. No error_log entries.

Switching to draft from the page or post editor does work. Very strange.

  • Hi, are you familiar with the developer tools in your browser? The quick edit interface uses Javascript to submit changes to the post, so you might see errors in the Javascript console or network tab. Let me know if you need further instructions for this.

If you do see the errors please attach screen shots or paste the error messages in this thread.

I can change a post from draft to published and back again from the post editor but not from the “All Posts” > Quick edit function. I tried reinstalling WordPress. This is a new bare bones install.

I disabled the only two plugins installed: Akismet and Limit Login Attempts Reloaded. I also tried switching to different themes: Twenty Twenty-Three and Twenty Twenty-Two. The behavior persists.

From the screenshot there is definitely a problem with the AJAX (Javascript) post, the 403 response indicates a permissions error from the server.

I wouldn’t expect a reinstallation or theme switch to help.

If you look at the network tab can you see the failed request? You can filter by (Fetch/XHR) and it will be red like the console error. Please share the response as that should give more insight into why the server is rejecting the post update.

That’s helpful. It’s coming from Wordfence, which is installed on the main hosting domain, and is not installed on this addon domain.

OK, couple of things you could try:
    – disable Wordfence on the main domain to see if the error stops
    – install Wordfence on this addon domain to see if it fixes some sort of cross domain permissions error

I’m not very familiar with Wordfence but maybe there are domain settings. You might need to reach out to their support.

I put Wordfence in learning mode on the main domain and was then able to whitelist the action it flagged and blocked on the subdomain. I will install it on the subdomain next and reach out to their support if further issues arise. Thank you for helping me narrow down what was causing the problem.

    Great! You’re welcome.
