I’m getting this message when trying to change the featured images of any posts:

To edit the featured image, you need permission to upload media.

My site was working fine till today.

I suspect it has to do with the latest WP update, but not sure what to do now.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I suspect it has to do with the latest WP update,

Or some update or configuration change on the SERVER.

For starters, kindly go to TOOLS => SITE HEALTH => INFO => FILESYSTEM PERMISSIONS to see if all the directories are writable.

If you see any unwritable directories there, kindly see:

Thanks @gappiah for the suggestion but I checked and the permissions are all writable. Anything else I should look into guys?

    Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve looked into this further, and it seems the error message “To edit the featured image, you need permission to upload media.” is displayed when the WordPress user does not have the “upload_files” capability.

So it seems your user capabilities have somehow gotten messed up (unless you’re using a “Contributor” account, which doesn’t have this capability).

See if you can use a plugin like PublishPress Capabilities to restore this.

    Good luck!

This is resolved, and for anyone else facing the same issue in the future, the reason was pretty dumb: I was accessing the admin dashboard through the http url instead of the https, and we didn’t have auto redirect. That’s why the server didn’t let me upload anything.
