I cannot automatically update plugins or themes on my production website, yet I can do so on my test website which is identical. I have been trying to debug this with my hosting company (who are very helpful) but I cannot find any solution. The hosting company keep coming back to me and saying the plugins are updating when they try them, but they still don’t update for me.

What happens is that I get the message “Updating plugin XXX” and the spinning circle indicating progress. From there nothing happens. It just hangs like that. If I wait a minute or so and go back to the plugins screen, the plugin has updated but if activated it is now de-activated. I can re-activate and it works OK.

I tried completely deleting my production site and replacing it with my test site and DB, but the problem seems to follow the domain, not the site. Similarly, if I point my production domain at my test site and DB, which is updating just fine, it no longer updates.

So I am convinced it has something to do with my primary domain, but I have no idea why. Any further debugging advice would be hugely appreciated and both I and the hosting support have run out of ideas. What could the difference possibly be between the “www” and the “test” sub-domains that would cause plugin updates to fail?

Some additional info that might be helpful:

In my “/wp-content/upgrade/” folder I see two sub-folders after trying to update “ewww-image-optimizer” plugin. One is “ewww-image-optimizer.tmp” which has a sub-folder “ewww-image-optimizer” that contains all the plugin files. The other is “wpf_update” which is empty.

The first folder indicates the plugin file unzipped successfully. But the fact that it’s still there indicates the process did not complete. I don’t know what to make of the empty folder. They are both dated this morning and are both 0755.
