Can't attribute post to a different user

Hi,
I can’t attribute new posts to different users, even if I create roles with identical privileges to those of the usual author/editor roles. The original author/editor roles don’t appear in the administration interface so I have made a new Author role with the same privileges. Is there a way for me to fix this problem without hooking a custom function for the author dropdown menu into the WP API?
