can't alter categories of custom posts

  • I’ve created a custom post type. My type supports categories.
    I’ve created some categories.

    I can assign a category to one of my custom posts. But after I’ve made the initial assignation, I can’t change it.

    If I go to my custom post, untick the category I selected, select another category and then click ‘update’, the admin page reloads. After the reload, the category that I deselected has been selected again. And my newly selected category has been deselected.

    This issue does not exist for my pages or normal (non-custom) posts.

    I went through the remediatory step suggested by esmi: repairing the database via wordpress. After this process completed, my issue still exists.
