• Hello,

    I have two sites: Latesthairmagazine.com and latesthairmag.com

I managed to change latesthairmagazine.com to a multisite network. However, because both sites were already created, the multisite function would not allow me to use directories, only subdomain setting. I tried to move the latesthairmag.com to the latesthairmagazine.com network, but it only show a “oops Google cannot find”.

So, I created app.latesthairmagazine.com so that I could prepare to import wxr from latesthairmag.com. No luck on what to do next. Please direct me to some explanatory instructions because I went to migrating to wordpress, but the instructions are general and I am using 1and1 hosting, not cpanel.

I also went into my 1and1 files and set my latesthairmag.com directory to app.latesthairmagazine.com on the main multisite.

  • Hey,

Seems more customers of us playing with network installations. Personally I always prefer subdomains.

    – What was the url for “Oops Google cannot find” ?

Currently we are working on something and I will put the instructions for network installations on top of my list.

    MARKO! ??

    Sorry, I like him ??

latesthairmagazine.com as a subdomain is okay, even if you want to make it have a custom domain later.

That was perfect! So what happened on import? Did that work?

Actually, right after I posted this, it connected. But what I don’t understand and still searching for now, is how to use plugins in the multisite. I have a directory plugin that I am trying to use for both sites but using the same information. The directory plugin has its own structure, so I didn’t need to create a database for it.Otherwise I would have just routed the same database info to both directories on the two sites so when one was updated, the other had access to the newly updated info. The Network Plugins list shows that the plugin is installed in the network, but do I install the plugin in all the sites as well? I want to use the shortcode to display the directory info on both sites.

The whole reason I am doing the multisite thing is to avoid having to update the directory twice each time users add their business to one of the two pages. I want to use the same shortcodes to add and view the queries for the directory (I hope someone understands what I am trying to say LOL)

What can I read to help me understand working with plugins and their shortcodes in a network. I don’t know if I should uninstall all the plugins in the separate sites and have them only on the network admin plugin pages or should I keep them there? So confused….

Okay, I went in and deactivated all the plugins on my two sites, then I made sure that the plugins in the network dashboard were all activated. Now when I put a shortcode in one of the sites, it doesn’t register.

If you want a plugin to run on all sites on your network, go to wp-admin/network/plugins.php and click on Network Activate. If you only want them active on ONE site, then just activate it per site ?? Everything is installed once, and activated as you need it.

The whole reason I am doing the multisite thing is to avoid having to update the directory twice each time users add their business to one of the two pages.

I’m fairly sure that won’t work the way you want it to. Multisite is multiple separate sites. So unless a plugin has settings for the network, you’ll have to configure it per-site.
