• In the WP admin section, editing a product, on the page for editing an existing variable product I get some problems.

I try to update my variable product, I need to add a term and use that in my variations.

I click Attributes -> then select my attribute -> then I click on the button “Add new”. I want to use a term I have already made in the “global” list of terms. When I type the name and click enter, I get an error message “There is already a term by that name in this taxonomy.” (or similar, I use WordPress in another language)

Well, thank you WooCommerce, I know I already have it! And now I would like to use it… ??

How do I add an existing term to my product in the admin section of WooCommerce?

It used to be just a entry field you could type in, if you typed your term, it appeared in a drop down list (data field?). Now it is a select-field that I can’t add terms to.

If I try to add a term that is not in that taxonomy it is added to the product and the global list of attributes.

Example: I have an attribute that is “Year”. In my product there is one term called “2022”. Now I want to add “2023” to the attributes available for this product to update all my variants. “2023” is in the list of terms in the global list for Year, but on the product page I can only see 2022 in the select list. If I click “add new” and type “2023” I get the error message mentioned above.

This is very confusing and frustrating.

How do I add an existing term so that I can use it for my variable products?

I just updated WooCommerce to version 7.4.0 from a version about a year old, I think it was 4.7 or so.

    Please help!

  • Hi there, @dazedandconfused2 , and welcome to the WooCommerce support forum.

Admittedly, a few things have changed, since WooCommerce version 4.7, so let’s check out how adding terms to variable products currently works:

    • Head to the Attributes tab, under Product data, as shown here
    • Select an already existing Attribute, from the list of Custom product attribute ones, as showcased here
      • Either click on the Select all button, for importing the already existing values for that Attribute
      • OR click on the Add new button, for adding a new value to the list of existing ones (it will be added both to that variable product, and also in the list of values for that Attribute, for saving repetition in the future)
      • Linked here is a screenshot showcasing that

For adding attributes via the wp-admin > Products > Attributes screen, in order to have them already available for when creating new variable products, select the Configure terms link for that attribute, in that screen, as showcased here.

As I understand, this covers your inquiry as far as a single language WooCommerce installation goes. For the specifics of your particular bi- or multilingual set up, kindly elaborate further on that.

I trust that points you in the right direction. Please let us know if you have any further questions about this matter, or if we misinterpret your concern in any way. We will be happy to help you further.

Hi Pepe, Thanks so much for answering!

In my admin section it looks different from your screenshot #3 (https://snipboard.io/tcOe9a.jpg).

On your screen you have a “rouded square” with the text “Sale1” in it. That is how it used to look for me as well in the earlier version of WooCommerce.

For me I see a old-fashioned selectbox for the values. Each value is one row, not a rounded square. Only the values I had already added before the upgrade are in the selectbox and I cannot add an existing one from the?wp-admin > Products > Attributes?screen. So I don’t see the “rounded squares” anymore.

Also: if I select the select box, all rows appear highlighted. If I click “Select none” they are all unselected, but if I click “Select all” after that, nothing happens.

    This is strange…

Is there a bug? Something wrong in my particular system?

The way you explained it and the screen shots is how it used to work for me in the earlier version. Thanks again for taking the time to answer!
