Can't add a favicon in Twenty Fourteen

I have followed the Codex instructions to the letter – all it gives me is a few horizontal lines where the favicon should be. My site is soulpathsthejourney.org – could someone give me a clue as to what is going on here?
I should add that when I add the 16×16 px favicon image – or the original 500×500 px image as per the instructions in the Customize/Site Identification area – I get a “Error Cropping this Image.”
I’m completely baffled.
Help!!
