When I tried updating Yoast plugin, some error occurred, and my website was not accessible. After several stressful minutes it worked but Yoast was not active. Whether I click the “Activate” hyperlink or select the box, and try to Activate from the pull down it just doesn’t do anything.

Have you guys encountered this problem? and how to fix?

    Hi @manuscope

We’re sorry to hear you’re encountering issues with the Yoast SEO plugin on your website.

Just to confirm, is your website on the latest version of WordPress 5.7.1, Yoast SEO 16.2, and are the rest of your plugins and themes activated?

Are there any visible error messages that appear when you try and click on the ‘activate’ link for the Yoast SEO plugin in your list of plugins? If so, could you send us a screenshot?

Otherwise, we would recommend trying to manually update the plugin again to v16.2 via FTP and then see if this helps resolve the issue — https://yoast.com/help/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp

That is correct. I have WP 5.7.1 and Yoast 16.2.

Do I need to DELETE the plugin before I update? I don’t want to lose the information I have stored, which is why I ask. I figure if I just re-installed the plugin (\while I had the current one inactive” would be okay?

    Hi @manuscope

You shouldn’t lose any of the information (such as focus keyphrases and metadata) as these are stored in your database and not in the plugin folder, should you decide to delete the plugin from your list of plugins and do a fresh reinstall.

However, please just make sure to prepare the appropriate backups of your site when making any changes.

If you decide to delete and reinstall the plugin, can you advise if you are able to activate it and that there are no further issues?

I just got a chance to download the Yoast and installed it on top of my original one.

Sadly, it did delete my information. Could you please tell me where I could find the old files? or which folder they are located? I would like to see if I can retrieve any of my old settings back.

    Hi @manuscope

Were you able to prepare backups for your website?

We do know that if you delete the plugin from your list of plugins and just reinstall a fresh copy of Yoast SEO v16.2, it shouldn’t delete any data such as focus keyphrases, or the other settings you’ve previously set, as those are stored in the database, and not in your plugins folder. You can learn more about where data in the plugin is stored here — https://yoast.com/help/how-can-i-uninstall-my-plugin/ (you can scroll down to the complete data removal section to find out which tables are being used)
