As advised, when I try to activate the troubleshooting mode I get a message as follows:
We were unable to copy the plugin file required to enable the Troubleshooting Mode.

The Must Use Plugins Directory is Not Writable. I’ve tried deactivating/activating, then tried deleting/reinstalling/activating but continue to have a non writable Must Use Plugins directory.

Could it be something to do with my site not being a multisite? I’ve read that the Must Use Plugins directory is for multisites…

    I am unsure what I should do…

    Hiya,

I see you do have a Must Use folder at least, as there’s a plugin in there already from your hosting provider. Let’s see about changing the permissions for the folder, there’s two possible reasons it’s unavailable, it’s either got the wrong folder permissions, or the wrong user or group has access to it.

You can change the permissions either with an FTP client, or with a file editor tool from your host (if they offer one), this is usually a right click option (if you can’t find it, you could also ask your host to help you out with this though).

The permissions are often represented as numbers, if this is the case for you, look to change them to 750, this means the folder owner has full access, the group can read and write files if they need, and anonymous users (visitors) can’t do anything.

Alternatively, if it’s represented as just checkboxes, you want it to look like this:

    • Owner with Read, Write and Execute
    • Group with Read and Execute
    • Public with nothing

    Hi Marius

I’ve followed your advice – thank you for this.

Unfortunately, I was denied permission to update the directory permission to 750 (it’s set at 755 btw). I will ask my provider for help on this one but I just wanted to check with you that I was trying to change permissions on the correct directory.

    ‘/wp-content/plugins/health-check/assets/mu-plugin’ to ‘750’
    Command: cd “/wp-content/plugins/health-check/assets”
    Response: New directory is: “/wp-content/plugins/health-check/assets”
    Command: chmod 750 “mu-plugin”
Error: set attrs for /wp-content/plugins/health-check/assets/mu-plugin: permission denied

    Thanks

    Hiya,

So 755 is fine, 750 is just the minimum recommended.

The directory is wrong though, it should be wp-content/mu-plugins (the directory may not exist by default), the one you are looking at is inside the plugin and is just the reference for the file we wish to copy ??
