My setup is working fine with no issues on my dev site at Webfaction – but the exact same files and setup fails to download file on the live site, hosted at Rackspace (assets, uploads, etc hosted at rackspace cdn). In both places, I’m bypassing the downloads folder to avoid permissions issues, instead linking directly to the Media Library file. Any ideas why this may be happening? On the live site, the form submission (using Email before Download companion plugin to block download with CF7 form) correctly reveals a download link, and that link url is exactly the same as the dev site generated download link url. But on live, clicking that link just fails silently, where on dev site the file is downloaded.

Update: Rackspace CDN was red herring. The issue is definitely with Download Monitor – I was running version 1.9.0 on dev, and the current version 1.9.1 on live. I just updated dev to the newest version (1.9.1), and now the same failing behavior is happening on dev. Looking at the v.1.9.1 changelog, I don’t see anything that looks suspect. Please help! Thanks.

Final Update: My apologies – the issue was not at all with the Download Monitor plugin, but rather the Email Before Download plugin. Specifically, using a field name other than ‘your-email’ for the email field was causing the snafu. Here’s the specific support thread addressing it. I hope this helps someone else; it doesn’t sit well with me that something this trivial could jack everything up. I’d like to see the Email Before Download devs generalize this in their code, so any field name could be used for the email field. FWIW, there are 6 references to ‘your-email’ as the field name in the plugin code, and the readme.txt specifies that this field name must be used.

    Hey,

Sorry for my delayed response but I’m glad to hear you’ve got it working again.

Email before download is a third-party plugin originally built for an older (no longer supported) version of Download Monitor. You could try contacting it’s developer and see if they can help you resolving this issue.

Another thing you could do is check one of our own locking extensions like Email Lock (https://www.download-monitor.com/extensions/email-lock/). Our own extensions are fully supported and come with premium email support to help you resolve any issues you might run into.

    Cheers,
    Barry
