I just updated a bunch of plugins and as soon as the process was completed, the screen froze and I could not navigate anywhere in my dashboard. Then I tried to access my website in another tab, but got this error message: “Unable to start another process. Maximum number of processes reached, refreshing in 10 seconds.” I’ve search the forums and tried renaming my plugins folder to “plugins.hold” via my webhosting account file manager and then try logging into my dashboard, but I’m still getting the same error screen and I can’t even access the dashboard login screen. My website is https://www.mcelroyassoc.com. Help!

Have you contacted your hosting company?

    mcelroyb,

Oftentimes this is happens when your site maybe running to many processes and has your server somewhat overwhelmed.

In any WP installation there are several processes that run in the background. These sometimes can overwhelm a server and this is what sounds like has happened. As indicated by Jose Castaneda, contact your server and they should be able to help alleviate this issue for you.

Thank you both! Yes, I contacted my hosting company. Apparently there were more than 20 processes running. Must have had something to do with the bulk update of plugins I did. At any rate, they guided me through killing all the processes (that took several attempts). Once all were killed, I was able to open the dashboard login screen and actually get in. All my plugins had been deactivated (I guess that was because I killed at the processes?). I activated my plugins one at a time until I found one that was slowing things down considerably. It appears that one of those guilty plugins was a Google Analytics plugin. I also took the opportunity to make sure that all plugins that I am not using are deactivated. I had been sloppy about that. Thank you for your assistance.

    mcelroyb,

I know personally that I have been guilty of installing a new exciting plugin then at a later time decided to not use it any longer and left it active.

Just something for food for thought. I make it a regular part of my maintaining my website to check all my plugins and de-activating the ones that are no long used and deleting them from the database.

Helps ensure that I’m not creating any unnecessary strain on my server.
