Canonicalization, the homepage, and disaster
-
We just called in some outside SEO help for a site, who immediately found a canonicalization error. In his own words:
The following tag appears on https://www.myplumberca.com:
<link rel=”canonical” href=”https://www.myplumberca.com/” />
However, https://www.myplumberca.com/ redirects to:
This creates a “virtual canonical loop”, which can cause serious ranking issues. We have seen sites with this issue often get deindexed or have the inability to rank for even branded queries.
Sure enough, this is because everything is set to display the homepage as https://www.myplumberca.com, except your plugin pulls the canonical url from the slug, which is https://www.myplumberca.com/.
I’ve already fixed the problem for our site, but you might want to look into adding this back into your canonicalization logic, if that’s at all possible.
