canonical URL on a https from a http site

I am a bit confused as to how to fix our canonical URL, right now on the site there is nothing on it.
I am told that I have to do this: WWW Resolve
Be sure that https://www.mywebsite.com and mywebsite.com are not running in parallel.
My website did not have a ssl, but now it does.
