Cannot Use Valid API

  • Have inherited a self-hosted WP site.

    Can log into wp.org & .com, can go to user profile & retrieve API key.

    Cannot install Akismet or WP stats as it says the key is already assigned, though the user it is assigned to is the one I use to log in.

    Do not know of A) any other instance of WP using this key, or B) how to determine what/where/who such an instance may be.

    Have searched extensively, most posts just say to re-enter the key, but neither plugin will allow that.

    Any ideas?
