• Since I have updated from 3.8.1, I get this error:

“failed to upload due to an error. Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

I was missing the “04” month folder, so I added that. Now I get this error:

“failed to upload due to an error. The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/04.”

I have since updated to 3.9 hoping that it would fix the problem but it did not. I have changed permissions on the wp-content folder without effect. There is a ton of space on my host so that is not the issue.

It is strange because I have another wordpress site (version 3.8.3) with the same host and it uploads images without issue.

    Really frustrated, please help!

  • Have you tried uploading image on a old article (any post before april)? Let us know if the issue is still there. It might be possible that your server /tmp folder is full ( contact host to confirm).

Thanks for replying so quickly! I cannot upload anything to the media library even if I start by trying to insert media into an old post.

I don’t think it is a server issue because my other wordpress site (version 3.8.3) on the same server has no problem uploading images.

Make sure all the folders including wp-content/uploads belong to the user for which wordpress is installed. The uploading will fail if you have created a folder with like say root permissions.

Also try changing permissions to 777 for the folder wp-content/uploads and see if it works.

Already tried changing permission to 777 for the wp-content folder. Did not work. Not sure how you check if the folders belong to the user. How do you do that?

You will need ssh access to find user and group permissions of a folder or file.

Before going into that let us know the file permissions of
    ==
    uploads folder
    2014 folder
    04 folder

You have to change the permissions of:

    wp-content/
    wp-content/uploads
    wp-content/uploads/2014/

After that, WP SHOULD be able to generate the 04 folder for you. Use permissions 755 on the folders.

I deleted the 04 folder that I made and changed the permissions on these folders to 755:

    wp-content
    uploads
    2014

Now when I try to add an image to the media library it says:

“failed to upload due to an error. Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

    Back to square one.

    Same problem.

    It is very inconvenient, indeed.
I hope WP will solve this problem as quick as possible. It is been few days already, too long.

    I have the same.

Is there any further news ?

What plugins are people using ?

I’m also having the same issue and I just updated to 3.9. Does anyone have any updates regarding this issue?

I checked with my host and they said for some “mysterious” reason, the permissions on my folder had changed. They fixed it and now – no problems. Worth checking but I have a feeling that is only one of the possibilities. Good luck!

All of the sites I’ve seen states that the permission needs to be changed but it doesn’t work. Anyone else found a way to fix this issue? Is a new version of WordPress coming out to fix this issue?
