I’m trying to upload a new header image but receiving an error message of, “The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/07.” A web search indicates changing permissions of my upload folder (or sub folders) to 777 will solve the issue. My question though is *why* I have to do this all of a sudden? None of the articles I read addressed this. For the past 2 months I’ve been able to upload any and all media to WordPress in the exact same manner, without issue.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

I understand how to resolve this issue. I’d like to know why I’m experiencing it in the first place. I’ve been able to carry out such uploads for 2 months now without issue. Is this something I can prevent in the future?

Perhaps something was changed on your server? There’s no way we can determine that from here but your hosts might be able to assist. Either way, it’s a server-related issue rather than a WordPress one.
